QC/NTI STREETSCAPE
Iqaluit, Nunavut
2013-14

The Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, in partnership with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., commissioned a large monument and a public sculpture garden located on their main headquarter property, in order to recognize the 20 year anniversary of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

Three accomplished carvers from different regions of Nunavut were selected to complete the 14-foot tall monument: Inuk Charlie, Paul Maliki and Looty Pijamini.

Guy Architects' concept brings context to the monument through a public space scheme inspired by the local tundra landscape and the Northern lights phenomenon. It not only beautifies a central downtown corner of Iqaluit, but also provides seating and gathering space to the public. During the dark long winters, this urban intervention acts as a light installation of changing color, evoking the Northern night sky.
